Are Kiwis stealing our jobs?

Are you angry that ANZ is shifting 100 jobs to New Zealand? The cost advantages of off-shoring to a country like India are clear, but why is ANZ bothering to move 100 Melbourne call centre jobs to Wellington?

Surely the bank can’t be saving that much money by off-shoring to a country with similar pay rates to Australia?

The Finance Sector Union has accused ANZ of profiting at the expense of Australian taxpayers and local jobs. "The FSU is urging the federal Government to use its financial assistance to force ANZ to keep Australian jobs in Australia," says union national secretary Leon Carter.

Or is this just a petty trans-Tasman tiff? After all, the 100 Aus jobs are going through national attrition and call centres have high annual staff turnover rates of 30% or more. No one is actually getting fired.

And shouldn’t a bank with a name like ANZ be free to move jobs over the ditch whenever it wants? Should NZ really be considered an overseas employment market for ANZ?

Lets be honest and say that NZ pay rates are actually lower than those in Aus.

  • ANZ naturally employs people in both the "A" and the "NZ" of its name. The call centre staff are simply being split more evenly now between the two countries.

  • What possible cost benefit could there be in moving people from one major Australasian city to another?? Melbourne to Mumbai is understandable, but Melbourne to Wellington? I don't get it. Please someone explain!

  • It's the Aus government, not the NZ one which is supporting ANZ, that's the union's whole point. ANZ can tap overseas credit markets by using the federal Government's wholesale funding guarantee. So it has an obligation to employ people here, not there. Whatever you say about the NZ in its name, that's just words, the bank is Australian owned. NZ is to all extents and purposes, just another overseas country. these jobs ARE going overseas. end of story

  • Let the Kiwis have these call centre jobs - they like that kind of thing there. Uni grads probably consider it a great career move. Shift them all to Wellington, or wherever, and keep the real jobs in Aus.

  • We  have recently moved for work reasons to Canberra, (where no Australia wants to live) from Auckland New Zealand and can not understand why the ANZ and Westpac in both countries operate so independently of each other, you can not take your history with you - strange they operate similar call centres and share staff.

    On the other hand, I have a recruitment company in New Zealand and I found employees in Wellington of much higher calibre than Auckland or Sydney , only because there is not the same variety of work  in Wellington and people do not move around the same as in the larger cities, good choice I say for ANZ, if you want educated english speaking call centre staff who do earn significantly less wages, especially in Wellington compared to Auckland. 

    Australia pays on an average 10-50% more $$ than NZ and your cost of living is so much less.

  • Lets be honest and say that NZ pay rates are actually lower than those in Aus. Admittedly not to the same level as those in India, but there will be a cost saving there I am sure.
    'Acsunts yesterday' - you are kidding right? feesh and cheeps is not that different to fush and chups. I can assure you from past experience (having worked where the offshoring has been done to Malaysia, India etc) that the accents and cultural differences are a lot worse there than here.
    ANZ are making a smart move by keeping withn Australasia rather than further afield...

  • Mate, yes, it was a joke. Talking to call centre Kiwis is just fine by me. Most foreign call centre employers are friendlier than the local ones to be honest.
